Closet Organizing Tips
Learn how to organize your closet with these simple tips

1. You can set aside a block of time to tackle your closet. For a small closet, expect to spend two to four hours. A walk-in closet might take four to six hours. If you can, get a friend to help you organize.
2. Buy plastic bins and study cardboard boxes so you can have places to store and sort your things.
3. If your clothes always seem to slip off wire hangers and end up scattered all over the floor, consider investing in foam hanger covers and extra-large covers to prevent this from happening. You can find a fixture store to buy 100 hangers for thirty dollars and covers for about ten dollars. You can recycle or throw away your wire hangers.
4. You should start out with a plan for what you want to store in your closet. Do you want to store shoes, clothes, and accessories? Or, do you want to fit in other items such as old trophies and artwork? Create storage space for items you plan to transfer out of your closet.

5. Take everything that’s not on a hanger out of your closet in a systemized way. Work your way from the top of the closet toward the bottom, from the bottom up, or from right to left.
6. Sort your items into separate piles for sorting as you remove them from the closet. Piles you can make include trash, giveaway, storage, or closet. You can toss whatever you don’t need into the trash pile. Giveaways are for items you can give away to charity, family, or friends. Storage consists of items you want to transfer out of your closet. You can put the items in the closet pile back in the closet as soon as you’ve finished cleaning.
7. If you haven’t worn an item of clothing in over a year, toss it. Chances are you’ll never wear it. You can put these in the trash or giveaway piles. However, if these are special occasion clothing items for weddings or events, store them carefully and label them. Box up seasonal shoes you won’t need for the season and pack them away till later.
8. Try to go through each item in your closet now, piece by piece, and examine them with as much objectivity as you can. If an item of clothing does not fit you anymore, put it in the trash or giveaway pile. Don’t set aside clothes “just in case.” Just focus on storing clothes that fit you today.
11. Be objective when it comes to old, ratty clothes. Your beloved worn-out jeans might fit into this category. As much as you hate to do it, make room in your closet for newer items that you’ll be able to enjoy in the future.
