Tips Tips to plan out the perfect paint job
Picking out paint colors
Determine your color scheme by taking your window treatments, existing furniture, and other accessories into
account. Choose a few dominant theme colors drawn from these items and visit your local paint store to get some
ideas for coordinating color chips. Be sure to examine the color chips by daylight and by night to see how your
color choices will look at different times of day.
Know how colors can affect a room’s atmosphere and space. Colors such as red, oranges, and yellows tend to close a
space down. These colors tend to pop out and meet the eye. Cooler colors such as violet, blue, or green make a room
larger because they recede visually. Darker colors also tend to make a room look smaller. Make small rooms look
larger by painting them in a light, neutral color.
Organizing
Before the day of the paint job, organize a tool station in the middle of the area you are planning to paint.
Gather your brushes, rollers, paint, hammers, screwdrivers, paint can opener, drop cloths, plastic bags, plastic
wrap, rags, and whatever else you plan to use.
Prepping
Remember: don’t rush and try to get everything done in one day! The day before you paint, clear away all
accessories and furniture whenever possible. If not, gather furniture towards the center of the room. Patch any
holes or cracks, put blue painter’s tape around windows and doors, and cover light fixtures with plastic bags.
Take the time to remove hardware
It might seem easy to paint around cabinet hinges and knobs, but you are bound to miss and drip all over your
hardware unless you are an experienced painter. Go around the house carrying zip top bags and unscrew door knobs,
hinges, cabinet knobs, light switch plates, light fixtures, and outlet covers. Put all the pieces together in
separate bags and label the location so you don’t get confused later.
Getting ready to paint
Just accept that you’re bound to get paint on whatever you’re wearing and take off all jewelry and wear old clothes
for your paint job. Wear comfortable, slip-on shoes you can take off if you need to leave the site of the paint
job. This way you won’t have to worry about tracking paint in other rooms. If you are painting a ceiling, be sure
to put a scarf, shower cap, or baseball cap over your hair and plastic over your eyeglasses.
Fix problem walls before you paint
If you have a wall with a hole or crack, always fix them before you start painting. Large holes and wide cracks can
be fixed with fiberglass tape. Spackle can handle small cracks and holes. You can also use texturizing products if
one part of your wall finish doesn’t match the rest.
